Tapeo Gluten Free Bakery

Tapeo gluten free lemon meringue pies

One afternoon a craving for something sweet via some passionate internet surfing led me to Tapeo Organic Bakery: a gluten free bakery in Sydney. Bakery? Gluten Free? Please do, go on.

Tapeo Organic Bakery

After encountering the Tapeo website and reading some reviews I started to become a bit overwhelmed by the possibility of gluten free baked goods. I clicked straight on the opening hours and realised I had an hour left in the day to get to this mystery place that had somehow slipped through my gluten free web searches.

Tapeo Bakery sits next door to Tapeo Cafe on the corner of Redfern and Chalmers St in Redfern. Tapeo Cafe serves an all day breakfast, lunch, tapas and wine! Sprinkled amongst these menus are gluten free items which I am yet to experience but the real gold mine is next door at Tapeo Bakery.

As I walked in, my heart started to race as I saw multiple desirable items in my view. “Lets not get to excited,” I told myself. I’ve come to learn to lower my expectations in encounters with typically gluten filled food. Once the counter freed up, I quietly asked what was gluten free in the cabinet. She responded, “Everything”. Breathe in, Breathe out.

You, you, you and you I quickly picked out those golden oldies I hadn’t managed to replicate or find anywhere else. I ordered a piece of Banana Cream Pie, Lemon Meringue Pie, Lemon Cheesecake and Berry Ricotta cake all gluten free.

The Banana Cream Pie didn’t make it home alive and the rest were devoured within 48 hours. Surprisingly, the texture of these goodies mimicked that of gluten-filled baked goods. Smothered upon a crumbly, buttery base was a blur of cream, lemon curd, meringue, banana and cheesecake. My body isn’t too impressed with this binge but it isn’t often that I encounter a gluten free bakery. From now on, if anyone owes me a favour –  its a Banana Cream Pie from Tapeo, thank you.

Beyond their selection, the best part of Tapeo Bakery is their contamination free kitchen. A real gluten free bakery, as opposed to a bakery selling gluten free goods amongst gluten-filled ones. Their bakery has their own kitchen specifically for their gluten free concoctions so the stress of gluten behind closed doors is not an issue.

Coeliacs in Sydney who are looking to get sugar happy: head over to Redfern and treat yourself at Tapeo Bakery.

Oh so disappointed! Went there this morning on discharge from hospital because what better way to heal 😉 and they only had regular Orange poppyseed muffins and a couple of friands. Oh the sadness!

Oh no! Perhaps you only went into their cafe instead of their bakery?
Their bakery is just around the corner – very deceiving!
